Training concept
The EPLC programme delivers a dynamic and engaging curriculum structured around eight interactive modules representing 120 hours of training, implemented over an 8-month period. Rooted in the Socratic method and problem-based learning, the programme challenges participants to think critically and apply their knowledge in real-world scenarios.
With an interdisciplinary approach, the curriculum combines theoretical insights with hands-on practice. Tutorials and skills training are at the heart of the learning experience, encouraging active participation through assignments that require independent preparation and self-study.
Designed as a blended learning experience, the programme seamlessly combines online instruction with immersive face-to-face sessions. All training is conducted in English, ensuring a globally accessible learning environment.
Face-to-face training
The face-to-face sessions will primarily take place in Trier, with the unique experience of visiting the Unitary Patent Court (UPC) and the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) in Luxembourg. Furthermore, if a hearing is scheduled on the day of the visit, participants will have the opportunity to attend and experience proceedings firsthand.
Over the course of three intensive training sessions in Trier, participants will engage in hands-on interactive learning, exploring the core aspects of patent litigation based on the UPCA and its rules of procedure.
The programme kicks off with a two-day introductory session, providing an opportunity to connect with peers and familiarizes yourself with the curriculum. This is followed by an immersive five-day module covering intensive mock trials and key topics in depth.
Towards the end of the course, a final five-day session will focus on refining practical UPC skills through engaging mock trials, role-playing exercises, and advocacy training. These final sessions will lead up to the oral exam, with participants expected to dedicate their afternoons and evenings to final preparations.
E-learning
With 60% of the course organised as online tutorials scheduled after working hours, it allows participants to attend from the comfort of their homes or offices, eliminating time spent on travel.
The e-learning component is specifically designed for knowledge-based topics that require less hands-on skill development, such as general European law and European private law, providing a solid foundation of general knowledge to build upon. These sessions will feature engaging pre-recorded presentations, all structured within a comprehensive syllabus that includes essential reading materials.
Participants will have full access to Maastricht University’s e-learning platform (Canvas), which offers a wealth of literature, reading resources, and digital library facilities such as Westlaw and HeinOnline.
To further enhance engagement, live online sessions will be conducted via Zoom based on participants’ preparatory work. These sessions will integrate interactive educational tools like Wooclap and FeedbackFruits, offering features such as online quizzes, peer reviews, and collaborative exercises.
The e-learning environment fosters a dynamic blend of individual, collaborative, and interactive learning, allowing participants to seamlessly test and track their progress. With a well-structured platform, clear learning objectives, and integrated assessment methods, participants can navigate the curriculum with clarity and confidence.

Testimonials
EPLC Course 2023/2024
I was surprised how practical this course is with so many mock trials and the tasks given by the tutors which push you out of your comfort zone to really practice the skills and how it will be in a real courtroom.
Anna Makowska, In-house Patent Manager, Poland
I think it’s a very good mixture between in person meetings and online meetings.
Gabriella Honecker, Patent Attorney, Germany
The balance between practical and theoretical elements is perfect.
I think the way the course assesses the practical elements in the way of mock hearings is one that allows you to deeply understand the theoretical elements in a way that would not be possible with mere reading or studying of the provisions.
Gregor König, Patent Attorney, Germany
The highlight was the way the groups work together – switching the members of the groups, meeting every member of the whole team and thereby learning from different approaches and cultures how to best deal with the system.
A further highlight was the tutors that ERA was able to hire for this course.
It was quite fascinating to see some of the renowned judges and very interesting people in the classroom face to face.
Gregor König, Patent Attorney, Germany
